Volcanic unrest at Hakone volcano after the 2015 phreatic eruption: reactivation of a ruptured hydrothermal system?

چکیده

Abstract Since the beginning of twenty-first century, volcanic unrest has occurred every 2–5 years at Hakone volcano. After 2015 eruption, activity changed significantly in terms seismicity and geochemistry. Like pre- co-eruptive unrest, each post-eruptive episode was detected by deep inflation below volcano (~ 10 km) low frequency events, which can be interpreted as reflecting supply magma or magmatic fluid from depth. The seismic during episodes also increased; however, beneath eruption center lower, especially shallow region 2 km), while sporadic swarms were observed caldera rim, ~ 3 km away center. This observation a recent InSAR analysis imply that hydrothermal system could composed multiple sub-systems, host earthquake show independent volume changes. established routes for steam sub-system (≥ 150 m deep) to surface through cap-rock, allowing emission super-heated 160 ºC). showed an increase magmatic/hydrothermal gas ratios (SO /H S HCl/H S) 2019 episode; no indicated geodetic observations. Net SO episodes, remained within usual range period, is inconsistent with intrusion. We consider triggered newly derived depth; breached cap-rock unable allow subsequent pressurization intensive heat released dried vapor-dominated portion inhibited scrubbing HCl higher ratio. have sealing zone near brittle–ductile transition self-sealing process seems not completed based on observations episodes.

Using Wind Data to Predict the Risk of Volcanic Eruption: An Example from Damavand Volcano, Iran

Damavand volcano is located 60 km to the East North- East of Tehran. It is a dormant stratovolcano outcrop in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran and is the highest mountain (5670 m) in the Middle East and West Asia. Mazandaran Province, one of the most populous provinces by population density, Semnan and Gorgan provinces further east are neighbours of the Damavand. Volcanism in Damavand goes...

Volcanic Ash and Daily Mortality in Sweden after the Icelandic Volcano Eruption of May 2011

In the aftermath of the Icelandic volcano Grimsvötn's eruption on 21 May 2011, volcanic ash reached Northern Europe. Elevated levels of ambient particles (PM) were registered in mid Sweden. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the Grimsvötn eruption had an effect on mortality in Sweden. Based on PM measurements at 16 sites across Sweden, data were classified into an ash exposed da...

Numerical models for ground deformation and gravity changes during volcanic unrest: simulating the hydrothermal system dynamics of a restless caldera

Ground deformation and gravity changes in restless calderas during periods of unrest can signal an impending eruption and thus must be correctly interpreted for hazard evaluation. It is critical to differentiate variation of geophysical observables related to volume and pressure changes induced by magma migration from shallow hydrothermal activity associated with hot fluids of magmatic origin r...

Source of the great A.D. 1257 mystery eruption unveiled, Samalas volcano, Rinjani Volcanic Complex, Indonesia.

Polar ice core records attest to a colossal volcanic eruption that took place ca. A.D. 1257 or 1258, most probably in the tropics. Estimates based on sulfate deposition in these records suggest that it yielded the largest volcanic sulfur release to the stratosphere of the past 7,000 y. Tree rings, medieval chronicles, and computational models corroborate the expected worldwide atmospheric and c...

Predictability of Volcano Eruption: lessons from a basaltic effusive volcano

Volcano eruption forecast remains a challenging and controversial problem despite the fact that data from volcano monitoring significantly increased in quantity and quality during the last decades. This study uses pattern recognition techniques to quantify the predictability of the 15 Piton de la Fournaise (PdlF) eruptions in the 1988-2001 period using increase of the daily seismicity rate as a...
